Nongpoh, May 5: A total of 23 participants from various districts of Meghalaya successfully completed a two-week capacity-building program at the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC), Byrnihat, Assam on Monday.
The training, titled “Executive Course on Bamboo Handicrafts & Utility Products Making”, was organized under the “Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP)” scheme by the Department of Commerce & Industries, Government of Meghalaya, in collaboration with NECBDC.
The training, which commenced on April 21, 2025, aimed to enhance the skills of artisans in the production of bamboo-based utility and decorative items.

During the course of two weeks, participants were trained in crafting a range of bamboo products such as mats, baskets, ornaments, and other utility items using traditional techniques and tools.
The valedictory programme on Monday was attended by M.C. Omi Ningshen (IRS-IT), Managing Director of NECBDC, D.M. Sun, Functional Manager, District Commerce and Industries Centre (DCIC), Ri Bhoi District, along with other officials from NECBDC and DCIC.
Ningshen congratulated the artisans and encouraged them to continue honing their skills and applying the knowledge gained through the program. He emphasized the importance of sustaining traditional craftsmanship while integrating modern practices to improve marketability and livelihoods.
The initiative reflects the ongoing efforts of the government and its partners to empower local artisans, promote sustainable industries, and boost the rural economy through the development of MSMEs in Meghalaya.
