Shillong, Aug 12: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma today inaugurated a series of key development and healthcare projects in Eastern West Khasi Hills, unveiling the Block Integrated Development Complex at Mairang C&RD Block Office and upgraded facilities at Tirot Sing Memorial Hospital.

The hospital now houses a Sick New Born Care Unit (SNCU), Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Adult Intensive Care Unit (AICU), and High Dependency Unit (HDU)—marking a significant boost to the district’s medical capacity. Officials said the additions will reduce the need for patients to travel to Shillong or beyond for critical treatment.

Speaking at the event, Sangma reaffirmed his government’s commitment to “bringing essential services closer to the people” and outlined a broader plan for balanced socio-economic growth, including a new DC office in Mairang, a district convention centre, improved street lighting, and the Shillong Secretariat Project at Mawdiangdiang. He also announced tourism initiatives under CM Elevate and expansion of PMAY (Awas Plus) to cover 2.8 lakh new beneficiaries.

The inauguration was attended by Health Minister Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh, C&RD Minister Abu Taher Mondal, Sports Minister Shakliar Warjri, State Planning Board Chairman Metbah Lyngdoh, senior officials, and local leaders. Traditional artist and North East Young Talent Artistes Awardee Marborsing Marbaniang performed at the function.

Dr. Lyngdoh hailed the new facilities as a milestone in the state’s healthcare transformation, noting that the SNCU, PICU, AICU, and HDU will strengthen neonatal, paediatric, and adult critical care services, cut infant and maternal mortality rates, and make specialist care more affordable and accessible.

Metbah Lyngdoh recalled the formation of the district and pressed for further infrastructure upgrades, including roads and lighting. Mondal highlighted the role of collaborative governance, while Warjri stressed that integrated development boosts both health and youth outcomes.

The Block Integrated Development Complex is expected to improve administrative efficiency, while the advanced hospital units—equipped with modern medical technology and staffed by trained professionals—will serve not only Eastern West Khasi Hills but also neighbouring districts.
