Williamnagar, May 27: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma came down hard on a construction firm on Tuesday for excessive delays in the completion of the bridge over Dama Chiring at Masa Akong (popularly known as Cinema Hall) in Williamnagar, the headquarters of East Garo Hills district.

The Chief Minister conducted a site inspection of the under-construction bridge after receiving complaints from Cabinet Minister and local MLA Marcuise Marak regarding the prolonged delay. The inspection turned confrontational as Sangma openly expressed frustration with the pace of work, warning that the firm would be blacklisted if it failed to complete the project on time.

Visibly displeased, the Chief Minister issued a stern warning to the contractor and directed the firm to submit daily progress reports without fail. He also ordered an immediate increase in manpower at the site, stressing that continued delays would not be tolerated.

“If you don’t have the capacity to do the job, then why did you take up the work. If you can’t do it, tell us… We’ll get someone else to complete the project,” Sangma told the contractor at the site. “Don’t drag this on… you’re not only tarnishing your own reputation but ours as well. I don’t like this at all. We work very aggressively and don’t like delays like these,” he further said.

He instructed officials on-site to place the contractor on a “red alert zone”, and making it clear that failure to meet the deadline would lead to the company being blacklisted and barred from taking up future projects in Meghalaya.

“Put them on full red alert zone… to be blacklisted if they don’t finish the work on time,” he told the officials.
