Meghalaya Edu Minister Foresees Dark Future for State if Students Do Not Qualify Civil Service

Must read

Shillong, April 23: Education Minister Rakkam Sangma has expressed concern over the dwindling number of successful UPSC candidates from Meghalaya, describing the situation as a wake-up call.

Sangma stressed the importance of aspirants being self-motivated and committed to clearing the prestigious exam. He called for a joint effort from the government, academia, institutions, and youth to address this issue.

Sangma hinted at potential government initiatives to combat this challenge in response to questions from the media.

During a media interaction in Shillong, Sangma expressed his concern that no students from Meghalaya have passed the UPSC exams this year. “This is a wake-up call for the governance, institutions, academicians, and the young people of Meghalaya,” he added. He firmly believes that students from Meghalaya are second to none, but the current trend is disheartening. He warned of a dark future for the state if it fails to produce civil service candidates in the future.

Sangma suggested that students and institutions should align themselves with national and international standards, both physically and mentally, to face and overcome the challenges of clearing the UPSC examinations.

In recent years, Meghalaya has had one UPSC topper. Ankur Das, a Shillong resident, broke a seven-year dry spell for Meghalaya in the UPSC results by clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2021 in his fifth attempt and securing an All India Rank (AIR) 52.

In the past year, at least one candidate from Meghalaya has cleared the UPSC exam. Swapnil Bhattacharyya, another Shillong resident, secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 344 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination (CSE) 2022-23.
