Shillong, Aug 27: In a proud moment for Meghalaya, Dr. Heipor Uni Bang, principal and founder of KB Memorial Secondary School, Wapung, East Jaintia Hills, has been selected for the prestigious National Teachers’ Award 2025. He will be felicitated by President Droupadi Murmu at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on Teachers’ Day, September 5.
Out of 45 teachers chosen across India, Dr. Bang represents Meghalaya with distinction. His recognition follows earlier honours—the District Teachers’ Award (2021) and the State Teachers’ Award (2024)—cementing his reputation as a visionary in the field of education.
This year, seven teachers from the Northeast feature among the awardees. They are: Nang Ekthani Mounglang (Arunachal Pradesh), Peleno Petenilhu (Nagaland), Koijam Machasana (Manipur), Karma Tempo Ethenpa (Sikkim), Dr. Heipor Uni Bang (Meghalaya), Bidisha Majumder (Tripura), and Debajit Ghosh (Assam).
Instituted by the Ministry of Education, the purpose of the National Teachers’ Award is to celebrate the unique contribution of some of the finest teachers in the country and honour those who, through their commitment and industry, have not only improved the quality of school education but also enriched the lives of their students.
Meghalaya Chief Minister, in a post on X, said: “Congratulations to Dr. Heipor Uni Bang, Principal and Founder of KB Memorial Secondary School, East Jaiñtia Hills District, for being selected for the prestigious National Teachers’ Award 2025. This remarkable achievement brings great pride to Meghalaya and reflects his unwavering dedication, exceptional service, and impactful contribution to the field of education.”
Local MLA Kyrmen Shylla of 6-Khliehriat Constituency also praised Dr. Bang’s achievement. “His journey reflects remarkable dedication. Beginning his teaching career in 2009 after completing an MSc in Botany, he went on to establish KB Memorial Secondary School in 2013 with the mission of making English-medium education accessible to children in rural East Jaintia Hills. With fees as low as ₹200 per month, the school quickly gained recognition and sent its first SSLC batch in 2015,” Shylla said.
He added, “A passionate academic, Dr. Bang earned his PhD in Environmental Management in 2024. Under his leadership, KB Memorial has emerged as a model of inclusive education, particularly for persons with disabilities (PWD). He introduced free education for PWD students, enabling many to pass the SSLC examinations. In a landmark achievement last year, one of his students with an intellectual disability secured a first division with letters—a rare feat in the state. His journey is a shining example of dedication, vision, and service to education.”
Local leaders, educationists, and the United Democratic Party (UDP) have also extended their congratulations, calling Dr. Bang’s recognition a source of pride for Meghalaya. “His unwavering service, vision, and dedication to education are an inspiration to teachers, students, and the community at large,” the UDP said in a statement.
