Assam’s Semi-Final: Bodoland Council polls on Sept 22, counting on Sept 26

Must read

Guwahati, Aug 27: The Assam State Election Commission on Tuesday announced the schedule for elections to the 40-member Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), often seen as the “semi-final” ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly polls.

Polling will be held on September 22, with counting scheduled for September 26. The last date for filing nominations is September 2.

A total of 26,57,937 voters are eligible to cast their votes, including 13,23,399 males, 13,34,521 females and 17 listed under the “Others” category. Voting will take place across 3,359 polling stations, up 6.77% from 2020. The Model Code of Conduct has come into force in the Bodoland Territorial Region.

The previous BTC polls in 2020 had delivered a fractured mandate, with the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) emerging as the single largest party with 17 seats. The BJP won nine, while the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) secured 12. Backed by the Gana Suraksha Party, the BJP and UPPL later formed the council government.

This time, the BJP is contesting alone, pitted directly against its ally UPPL, which currently heads the council. The BPF, another key player, continues to support the NDA government in Assam but is also in the fray.
