Shillong, Feb 3: Amid concerns over possible contamination, the Meghalaya Commissionerate of Food Safety has clarified that fish sold across the state are safe for consumption, with laboratory tests confirming the absence of heavy metals and formalin.
Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety Smti D.B.S. Mukhim on Monday said around 45 fish samples collected from different districts were sent to accredited laboratories in Kolkata for detailed analysis. The reports confirmed that all samples complied with the standards prescribed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and did not contain heavy metals beyond permissible limits.
She said the sampling was conducted in accordance with FSSAI norms and covered multiple districts to ensure broad surveillance. In addition to laboratory testing outside the state, the department also carries out routine on-the-spot checks through its “Food Safety on Wheels” initiative. Under the programme, officials visit markets, collect samples and conduct preliminary tests to detect possible adulteration.
Mukhim further stated that routine inspections have not detected the presence of formalin in fish being sold in Meghalaya. The department, however, remains in coordination with authorities in neighbouring states as a precautionary measure.
In a related development, egg samples recently collected from all districts were also tested and found to be within prescribed safety standards.
Advising consumers to follow basic hygiene practices such as washing fish thoroughly before cooking, the Deputy Commissioner assured the public that regular testing exercises are being conducted to safeguard food safety across the state.
