Meghalaya gets official anthem, logo on 52nd Statehood Day

Tura, Jan 20: Meghalaya observed its 52nd Statehood Day with a program at the District Auditorium & Library, in Tura on Saturday, attended by the Governor of Meghalaya, Phagu Chauhan, as Chief Guest, and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma as Guest of Honour.

Chief Minister Sangma, in his opening remarks, acknowledged the leaders who peacefully advocated for Meghalaya’s statehood. He underlined citizens’ responsibility to take the state forward, recognising the vision and sacrifice of those who secured freedom.

Discussing the state’s development, Sangma highlighted the increase in state expenditure over the last five years, leading to changes in sectors like Roads, Health, Education, Sports, and Youth Affairs. The improvement of PMGSY roads was also cited by Sangma, who said that since 2018, 2526 kilometres have been built, linking 600 villages. A special focus was placed on improving Block offices and approving new construction or modifications in 2500 Government schools.

Sangma outlined the focus on farmers, women, and youth, supporting initiatives like Self Help Groups, music, entrepreneurship, and sports. He announced the commitment to making the Meghalaya Games an annual event, rotating through different regions with new infrastructures in various districts.

The day featured the release of Meghalaya’s State Anthem and Logo. Chief Minister Sangma expressed pride as the state cabinet approved the official State Anthem after 52 years of statehood. The State Anthem, composed by Neil Nongkynrih, founder of the Shillong Chamber Choir, was a significant highlight.

The Chief Minister said, “It is with immense pride that the state cabinet has approved Official State Anthem after 52 years of statehood.”

The event honored 15 state employees with the Chief Minister’s Police Medal for Outstanding Service, while 6 received the Chief Minister’s Disaster Response Medal. Additionally, 21 individuals were presented with the Meghalaya Day Excellence Awards 2023.
