SHILLONG, FEB 26: The Meghalaya government has created over 2.3 lakh jobs during the last three years and is proposing to create another 1 lakh jobs in the next one year.
Informing this in his reply during the Assembly on Monday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said that unemployment rate in the state on average is around 3%, which is below the national average at 4.7%.
He said the state government is implementing several schemes/programmes for creation of employment opportunities. These include MGNREGS, CM-Elevate, PRIMEprogram, FOCUS, FOCUS+, Mission Mode Programs in Agriculture, Meghalaya Grassroot Music Project, Chief Minister’s Youth Centre, National Rural Livelihood Mission and Skills Meghalaya.
“In general, employment created through (these) different programmes is 2.3 lakh jobs in the last 3 years,” Sangma said.
Stating that government is working towards creating of 5.5 lakh jobs in the next five years, the CM said, “Rough estimate of 1 lakh jobs will be created in the next one year.”
Further, the chief minister also informed that over 3,000 jobs have been created in the government sector and these include 500 doctors and 30 nurses and technical staffs have been recruited in the medical department, 1000 in the police department and 1000 in the teaching job.
He however said apart from this, jobs are also created at the district level but the number is not available.
Moreover, the chief minister also informed that the government is targeting to create over 2.5 lakh jobs in the agriculture and allied sector in the next 4-5 years.
He said that the NRLM has been a successful model in the last five years, where the government has been able to create 1 lakh jobs for women and will be create another 1 lakh jobs in the next 4 years adding under Skills Meghalaya, 1.2 lakh people where trained of which 50% will be employed.
He said that tourism will be to generate direct and indirect employment of about 50,000 while the CM-Elevate which is a progressive programme will be create over 50,000 jobs and 20,000 in the IT sector. Another 10,000 will be created in the other government programmes.
“Therefore, we should be touching 5.5 lakh jobs (in the next five years),” Sangma added.
On the recruitment by the different district selection committees (DSCs), the CM said that it is not a fact that DSCs have not been calling (for applications) as they have been recruiting though it has not been at the desired level.
“Why, it is not happening because of fact that we had issues related to covid, court cases in terms of roster and once roster system is implemented, there was a bit of confusion…Now, we have allowed the DSC to approve vacancies and call for recruitment. Only when there is confusion, they will get clarification from the personnel department,” he said while adding he expect the process of recruitment will be much faster after a notification is out on this regards.
