Meghalaya Govt intensifies war on drugs, Conrad seeks society’s support

Must read

Shillong, Sept 25: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday affirmed that the Meghalaya government is working relentlessly to tackle the growing drug menace in the state.

“The government is leaving no stone unturned in its battle against drugs,” Sangma told reporters, underscoring the administration’s commitment to eradicating the problem.

He emphasized that the government is taking an aggressive stance, implementing decisive actions to curb the situation. One key measure includes enforcing the PIT NDPS Act (Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act) to address the issue at its root.

“The fact that 450 arrests have been made, 250 cases are ongoing, and drugs worth hundreds of crores have been seized is a clear reflection of the seriousness with which we are tackling this menace,” Sangma said, pointing to these statistics as evidence of the government’s determination.

The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of society’s participation in the fight against drugs. “Recently, I issued an order to establish a committee headed by an Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) in various cities and towns, with each district’s ADC taking the lead. These committees will involve local Rangbah Shnongs (village heads), development committees, and members of the community,” Sangma said. “The idea is to ensure that society as a whole plays an active role in addressing the drug menace.”

He further highlighted ongoing efforts, citing the DREAM project (Drug Rehabilitation and Elimination Action Mission), which is showing positive results at the grassroots level. “The recent formation of these committees is another clear indication of the government’s seriousness,” Sangma added.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that the drug problem is complex, extending beyond Meghalaya’s borders and even beyond the country. “This is a multi-layered issue, but we are working closely with the Government of India, other state governments, and district administrations to ensure a coordinated approach to tackling this challenge,” he said.
