Meghalaya Govt orders inquiry into alleged illegal coal mining in South West Khasi Hills

Shillong, June 23: The State government has ordered an inquiry into the alleged illegal mining of coal in South West Khasi Hills (SWKH).

The order issued by the Secretary in-charge Mining & Geology department said, “The Deputy Commissioner, South West Khasi Hills is hereby directed to conduct an inquiry into the alleged illegal mining of coal taking place in South West Khasi Hills District under Nonghyllam police station by Skindford Nongbri.”

It also directed the DC to submit a detailed report within 7 days “for onward submission to Justice (Retd) BP Katakey as desired by him.”

“Further, he is to take strict action against the person(s) under the provisions of MMDR Act, 1957 if the allegation is found to be true,” the order stated.

The Deputy Commissioner will be assisted in the inquiry by the Superintendent of Police (SP) of South West Khasi Hills District.
