SHILLONG, DEC 15: The Meghalaya High Court has directed completion of identifying vending zones for street vendors in the Laitumkhrah area by January next year.

The order passed by division bench comprising Chief Justice Soumen Sen and Justice HS Thangkhiew on December 10, was after taking note of the progress made by the Shillong Municipal Board.

“In view of the aforesaid progress and the averment made in the said affidavit that the location of the hawkers would be completed expectedly by the first week of January, 2026, let this matter be listed on 28.01.2026. Further report in the form of an affidavit shall be filed by the Shillong Municipal Board on the adjourned date,” the bench said.

The court was informed that out of 43 claims, 14 vendors were already included in the list published by the Provisional Town Vending Committee (PTVC), and 15 more vendors were found to be genuine and recommended for further action.

The PTVC has resolved to finalize the list of street vendors, and designated vending zones have been notified by the government.

A sub-committee is formulating a standard operating procedure for hearing claims and objections.
