Shillong, Nov 26: Meghalaya has informed the Centre of the steps being taken to improving the efficiency of the Public Distribution System (PDS).
This was informed by Comingone Ymbon, the Minister in-charge for Food Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Government of Meghalaya, to Pralhad Joshi, Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, during a meeting to discuss critical initiatives aimed at enhancing food security and service delivery in the state today.
Ymbon reaffirmed Meghalaya’s commitment to the successful implementation of the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and stressed the state’s efforts to ensure the equitable distribution of foodgrains to all beneficiaries. Despite facing logistical challenges due to its rugged terrain and scattered population, Meghalaya has been working diligently to overcome these barriers. The Minister outlined plans to address coverage gaps, enhance grievance redressal mechanisms, and guarantee that the benefits of the NFSA reach the most vulnerable households.
The meeting also focused on Meghalaya’s technology-driven initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency of the Public Distribution System (PDS). Ymbon highlighted the introduction of route optimisation techniques that are designed to reduce logistical costs, ensure timely delivery, and minimise transit losses, which will help overcome geographical constraints and improve service reliability.
In addition, Ymbon discussed Meghalaya’s collaboration with the United Nations World Food Programme (UNWFP), which works on modernising the PDS, reducing food wastage, and improving nutritional outcomes for vulnerable communities. The Minister lauded the success of these efforts in enhancing food supply chain management and promoting sustainability.
The discussion also covered measures for increasing transparency and accountability in food distribution. Ymbon highlighted the use of digital tools like Aadhaar-enabled services, e-POS devices, and real-time monitoring systems to ensure that resources are used efficiently and that food reaches the intended beneficiaries.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi praised Meghalaya’s proactive approach and innovative strategies, assuring the Centre’s continued support to enhance food security and welfare programs in the state. The meeting also explored opportunities for closer collaboration between the Centre and Meghalaya to strengthen the delivery of essential commodities and achieve sustainable development goals.
The delegation included Pravin Bakshi, Commissioner & Secretary, along with officials from the UNWFP, who underscored the state’s commitment to improving service delivery and addressing the needs of its citizens.
