Shillong, Feb 5: Amid growing concerns over Meghalaya’s high cancer incidence, the state government has launched “Meg Can Care”, a mission-mode initiative aimed at providing comprehensive cancer care across the state.
The initiative focuses on early detection at district and block levels to improve survival rates, upgrading treatment facilities in government hospitals, financial support to cover all types of expenses incurred on cancer treatment and public awareness campaigns to promote tobacco control and cancer prevention.
Meghalaya has one of the highest rates of cancer in India, particularly mouth and oesophagus cancer. Data from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) indicates that the state records 176 cancer cases per one lakh population, while East Khasi Hills alone reports 227 cases per lakh—more than double the national average of 100 per lakh.
“This rise in cancer cases is deeply concerning. The government is taking urgent steps to combat this crisis by ensuring that people get diagnosed early and have access to affordable treatment,” Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh said on World Cancer Day.
She attributed the high cancer rates to tobacco consumption and lifestyle factors, stressing the importance of awareness campaigns and preventive measures.
“The government is ensuring that no citizen faces financial hardship due to cancer treatment. MHIS covers all types of cancers, and people can check the live dashboard on the MHIS website for detailed information,” Lyngdoh said.
The state government is also strengthening cancer treatment infrastructure to ensure that patients do not have to travel far for treatment. She said the radiotherapy unit is being expanded, Bed capacity at Civil Hospital will be expanded from 50 to has increased from 50 to 200 beds soon while NEIGRIHMS offers advanced cancer treatments, including specialized surgeries and diagnostic tools like PET scans.
“Patients do not need to go to far-off cities for treatment. We are working closely with top institutions like Guwahati Medical College (GMC), B. Borooah Cancer Institute, and the North East Cancer Institute to ensure affordable and quality care,” Lyngdoh emphasized.
The government is also investing in cancer research to understand the specific risk factors affecting Meghalaya’s population.
“If we want to treat cancer effectively, we need strong research. The government is collaborating with specialized institutions to find solutions that work for Meghalaya,” the minister said.
“You are not alone. The government is with you at every step, ensuring that you receive timely and affordable care. Through ‘Meg Can Care,’ we are committed to fighting cancer together and saving lives” she said.
