Tura, May 21: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday chaired a joint meeting of the Police, Urban Affairs, and Veterinary Departments to formally initiate the development of a modern police complex at Rongkhon in West Garo Hills, a project aimed at strengthening urban infrastructure and easing congestion in Tura town.
The meeting, held at Tree House in Tura, discussed plans for consolidating police facilities at Rongkhon while relocating existing police infrastructure from the crowded Tura Bazar area.
Officials said the proposed initiative is expected to significantly decongest the town centre and create opportunities for developing public green spaces, beautification projects, and improved civic amenities in the heart of Tura.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasised the need for integrated urban planning that balances infrastructure expansion with environmental sustainability and public convenience.
He said the project aligns with the government’s broader vision of transforming Tura into a cleaner, greener, and better-planned urban centre.
The redevelopment of the Tura Bazar area is expected to facilitate pedestrian-friendly spaces, landscaping, and community-oriented green zones for residents and visitors.
Officials from the concerned departments deliberated on land requirements, coordination mechanisms, planning modalities, and phased implementation strategies to ensure smooth execution of the project.
The proposed police complex is also expected to improve administrative efficiency and provide upgraded infrastructure and public service facilities for police personnel.
The Meghalaya government reiterated its commitment to sustainable urban development and citizen-centric planning, with a focus on enhancing civic infrastructure, improving the quality of life, and preserving environmental balance in rapidly growing urban centres.
