Williamnagar, May 21: The Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress (MPYC) has urged the Meghalaya government to provide financial compensation and accommodation support to students from the state who will be appearing for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination scheduled for June 21.
In a letter addressed to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma through the Deputy Commissioner of North Garo Hills district, MPYC President Timjim K. Momin expressed concern over the difficulties faced by students following the cancellation of the NEET UG 2026 examination and the announcement of a fresh examination date.

The youth body claims that the cancellation has created emotional distress, uncertainty and financial strain for students and their families across Meghalaya, particularly those from remote and rural areas. According to the letter, students from districts such as North Garo Hills and other far-flung regions face additional challenges due to geographical isolation, transport difficulties and limited access to affordable accommodation near examination centres.
The MPYC pointed out that many students had already spent significant amounts on travel, lodging, food and other arrangements for the earlier examination schedule. Families, especially those from economically weaker sections, had reportedly made sacrifices to support their children’s academic aspirations and the re-examination has now imposed another round of expenses within a short period.
The organisation also highlighted concerns over the mental well-being of students, stating that prolonged uncertainty has caused stress and emotional exhaustion. It noted that some students, particularly those from financially disadvantaged backgrounds, are reportedly considering abandoning their examination aspirations due to the burden of repeated travel and accommodation costs.

In its appeal, the MPYC urged the Meghalaya government to provide financial compensation or reimbursement support to students appearing for the NEET UG 2026 re-examination. It also sought accommodation assistance and other necessary support for candidates travelling from remote and rural areas to examination centres.
“We sincerely hope that the Government of Meghalaya will intervene with urgency and compassion so that no deserving student from the state is forced to abandon their academic future because of financial hardship caused by circumstances beyond their control,” the letter further stated.
