Shillong, June 27: Deputy Inspector General of Police (Eastern Range) Davis NR Marak on Thursday said the Meghalaya police is ready to implement the new criminal laws, which will come into effect from July 1.

“Having said that, we will be knowing the actual challenges when we start implementing. Yes, we have done the best we can to prepare ourselves to implement these laws,” Marak told reporters at the sidelines of a workshop held in the city.

The three new criminal laws passed by the parliament include: the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA), which will replace the Indian Penal Code 1860, the Criminal Procedure Code 1973, and the Indian Evidence Act 1872, respectively.

“We have done extensive training for the police officers, who are supposed to implement the new laws and we hope that they have understood what they have been trained for. So now we just have to translate that training into actual implementation now,” he said.

Asked, the DIG said the existing laws against crimes against women and children have been strengthened with the coming of the new criminal laws.

“We are also hopeful that it (new laws) will help in reducing crimes against women,” he added.
