SHILLONG, APR 1: East Khasi Hills police will continue coordinated raids against prostitution in the city, with a focus on rehabilitation and addressing the root causes of the issue, SP Vivek Syiem said on Wednesday.
“This coordinated raid will be sustained. The problem of sex workers is not just a police issue, it’s a social problem, concerning livelihood issues,” Syiem said.
“We need a concerted effort with other departments, social welfare, and health, to address concerns like HIV growth and prostitution in residential and religious areas.”
Syiem urged hotels and guest houses to avoid such activities, warning of strict action.
“We will take up with social welfare for rehabilitation of willing sex workers in skill-based vocations and with health to prevent HIV spread,” he added.
The SP highlighted the link between local prostitution networks and human trafficking.
“It starts with small networks, which grow bigger, luring girls with easy money, putting them at risk,” Syiem said, emphasizing the need for vigilance.
