Meghalaya puts ₹1,800 Cr behind sports infra push as conclave 2026 charts road to National Games 2027

Shillong, Jun 16: Meghalaya’s ₹1,800 crore bet on sports infrastructure took centre stage Tuesday as the Meghalaya Sports Conclave 2026 concluded, with the state making it clear that stadiums, indoor arenas and talent systems are being built to last beyond the 39th National Games in 2027.

Organised by the Department of Sports & Youth Affairs, the conclave brought Olympic medallists, athletes, policymakers and sports experts together to discuss governance, digital transformation and athlete development. But the scale of investment emerged as the defining message of the day.

Video presentations spotlighted how Meghalaya is reshaping its sporting landscape with large-scale projects.

Officials said total sports infrastructure investments now touch ₹1,800 crore. The recently inaugurated ₹132 crore Integrated Multipurpose Indoor Sports Complex was highlighted as a new hub for indoor disciplines.

Redevelopment work is underway at the JN Sports Complex and PA Sangma Integrated Sports Complex to upgrade training and competition facilities. The flagship ₹732 crore Mawkhanu Football Stadium, envisioned as India’s first football stadium built entirely to FIFA and AFC standards with 40,000 seats, was positioned as the centrepiece of the state’s infrastructure push.

The first thematic session on Transforming India’s Sports Governance featured Olympic medallists Manu Bhaker and P.R. Sreejesh alongside governance experts.

Panellists stressed that policies must go beyond elite athletes and create inclusive ecosystems from the grassroots. Commissioner & Secretary Dr Vijay Kumar said Meghalaya’s community-based approach built on trust and local participation is being applied to sports, and that the state’s long-term infrastructure spending ahead of the National Games is part of that same model.

The second session on Innovation and Digital Transformation in Sports looked at how technology and data analytics are reshaping performance monitoring.

World Athletics Vice President Dr Adille Sumariwalla, Go Sports Foundation Board Member Deepthi Bopaiah, Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra and RevSportz founder Boria Majumdar joined the discussion, with Bindra and Majumdar participating virtually.

Speakers underlined evidence-based decision-making for athlete development and commended Meghalaya for significantly increasing sports allocations since 2018, which has enabled the current infrastructure build-out.

The final session on Holistic Development for a Sustainable Sporting Future saw Chief Secretary Dr. Shakil P. Ahammed in conversation with Manu Bhaker, Hima Das, Sheetal Devi, Harvinder Singh and P.R. Sreejesh.

The athletes spoke about their personal journeys and the systems that supported them.

Discussions pointed to stronger collaboration between governments, federations and institutions, early talent identification, and wider social recognition of sports as a pathway for growth.

With the National Games now less than a year away, the conclave closed by reaffirming Meghalaya’s intent to turn the ₹1,800 crore infrastructure push into a lasting legacy.

The focus, officials said, is on sustained investment and a clear vision that treats sports as a transformative force for youth and communities across the state.
