Shillong, May 12: Meghalaya government has finally received the letter from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan exempting NEHU-affiliated colleges in the states from the purview of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET).

The later, dated May 11, 2022, was addressed to Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.

In the letter, Pradhan said, “Taking into consideration the concerns raised by you (Conrad) like geographical conditions, hilly terrain, far flung location, limited digital connectivity, infrastructure, etc. the affiliated colleges of NEHU will continue with the existing practice for admission instead of CUET. ”

Mentionably, Meghalaya has been seeking exemption from CUET and has written to the Centre for the same. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on May 2, 2022 had met the Union Education Minister and requested the Centre to exempt the students in the state from appearing for the CUET in NEHU affiliated colleges – both private and government funded.

However, it is mandatory to take CUET for those applying for admission to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and colleges within its two campuses at Shillong and Tura.
