Meghalaya Speaker constitutes 7 Assembly committees for one-year term from May 1

SHILLONG, APR 29: Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma has constituted seven key committees of the House for a one-year term effective May 1, 2026.

According to a notification issued by the Assembly Secretariat on April 27, the committees were constituted under Rule 194(1) of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.

Pongseng R Marak has been named Chairman of the Committee on Petitions, Marthon J Sangma as chairman of Committee on Privileges, Gavin Miguel Mylliem as chairman of Committee on Subordinate Legislation, Renikton L Tongkhar as chairman of Committee on Government Assurances, Santa Mary Shylla as chairperson of Committee on Empowerment of Women, Rakkam A Sangma as chairman of Committee on Environment and Jim M Sangma as chairman of Library Committee.

The notification, stated that the term of all seven committees will be for one year with effect from May 1, 2026.

Assembly committees play a key role in examining petitions from the public, matters of breach of privilege, scrutiny of rules framed under laws, and tracking assurances given by ministers on the floor of the House.
