Meghalaya Speaker reviews new assembly project, stresses quality over speed

Must read

Shillong, June 13: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma on Thursday said the state is committed to completing the new assembly building at Mawdiangdiang within the scheduled timeline—but without compromising on construction quality.

“This was a review meeting to assess the ongoing work. We have taken steps to ensure completion within the scheduled time frame, but we are equally committed to maintaining the quality and standard of construction. We cannot afford to rush and compromise,” Sangma told reporters following a high-level meeting held at the assembly secretariat’s conference rroom in Khyndailad.

The meeting was attended by top government officials including Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong (Parliamentary Affairs and PWD – Buildings) and Sniawbhalang Dhar (Urban Affairs), Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang, Commissioner & Secretary of Finance and Planning Vijay Kumar D, and Commissioner & Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs Cyril Diengdoh. Senior officials from PWD, Planning, Urban Affairs, and technical advisers also participated.

Key discussions revolved around construction progress, technical hurdles, and inter-agency coordination. Sangma pointed out that the Assembly building is a complex infrastructure project involving specialized systems such as security, acoustics, audio-visual integration, interiors, and carpeting.

“With multiple systems involved, we cannot rely on a single vendor. Various vendors must work in tandem, and we’ve agreed that they must coordinate and supplement each other throughout,” he said.

He noted that although the construction remains on track, the team is actively addressing technical refinements. A brief shower earlier in the day, for instance, exposed roof noise issues, prompting the need for additional acoustics expertise.

To maintain pace without compromising quality, vendors have been asked to operate in three shifts. “Designers and contractors estimate they may need six to eight more months to complete the work,” Sangma added.

On the financial side, the Speaker confirmed that the project remains within its sanctioned budget. “While additional spending can’t be ruled out, we’re striving to stay within the original estimates.”

“We are committed to handing over a building that is not only structurally sound but technologically integrated, secure, and befitting the dignity of the institution it will house,” he said.
