Meghalaya to draw up renewable energy roadmap, pushes rooftop solar and battery storage

Shillong, June 23: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday directed officials to prepare a comprehensive roadmap for expanding renewable energy adoption in the state, with a special focus on rooftop solar installations, battery storage and decentralized energy solutions.

Chairing a review meeting on the implementation of the Centre’s PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana at the State Guest House in Shillong, Sangma stressed the need for an integrated renewable energy strategy tailored to Meghalaya’s geographical conditions.

The meeting reviewed the progress of the flagship scheme, which aims to provide up to 300 units of free electricity per month to households through rooftop solar systems, with central financial assistance of up to ₹78,000 for eligible beneficiaries.

Officials informed the Chief Minister that despite the central subsidy, consumer adoption in Meghalaya remains slow due to higher upfront costs arising from transportation expenses, difficult terrain and the limited scale of installations in the state.

Sangma reviewed findings from pilot rooftop solar projects and discussed measures to make solar installations more attractive by reducing payback periods and enhancing consumer benefits. He also emphasised integrating battery storage systems to improve energy reliability and reduce dependence on conventional grid power during peak demand.

The meeting also explored increasing rooftop solar penetration across government buildings, schools and anganwadi centres, while calling for greater public awareness through educational institutions and youth groups.

Highlighting the state’s unique topography, the Chief Minister urged officials to explore decentralized renewable energy options such as biomass and biogas plants, micro-hydel projects and solar-powered community infrastructure, saying these technologies could provide sustainable energy solutions to remote and rural areas.

Officials have been tasked with preparing a detailed action plan to improve consumer participation, strengthen awareness campaigns and accelerate Meghalaya’s transition towards clean and sustainable energy.
