Shillong, Jan 5: Tourist taxis across the state are poised to stage a 48-hour road strike starting Friday, protesting the anticipated increase in penalties for hit-and-run cases under the yet-to-be-enforced Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
However, responding to the protest, Cabinet Minister in charge of Tourism, Paul Lyngdoh, said that this is a matter of concern not just for Meghalaya but for the entire nation.
Adding that the rules of law must prevail, the Cabinet Minister said that there are many cases of rash driving in which drivers take undue advantage of the laws of the land.
Reacting to the 48-hour ban called by the tourist cabs, the minister said that measures should be taken in tandem with the rest of the country.
Cab owners and drivers in Meghalaya, along with the rest of the country, are voicing their opposition to the proposed legal changes.
