Me’gong Festival promises epic memories as clear skies await after a rainy déjà vu start

Tura, Dec 7: Two mega festivals of the state and both had a similar start. If the wash-out of Day 1 of Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival 2023 in November in Ri-Bhoi district wasn’t enough, the Me’gong Festival in West Garo Hills in December met a similar fate on Thursday as rain god played spoilsport once again, despite the events being 20 days apart.

But Day 2 and 3 were super electrifying at the Shillong Cherry Blosom Festival, and the same is anticipated for the Me’gong Festival with weather report indicating clear skies for Friday and Saturday. However, there is one key difference, the main stage and the stalls at the venue of Cherry Blossom Festival suffered badly because of the rain due to lack of rain covers; but, Me’gong Festival has ensured that stalls are properly covered so that any rain wouldn’t foil plans although that was missed for the main stage.

Even so, the lapse is apparent and Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh has acknowledged the same. Speaking to Hub News, the Tourism Minister said, “This is a repeat of Cherry Blossom (Festival’s) first day and the organisers have told that the performances act of the first day will be carried forward to the second day. This 3rd edition of Me’gong festival, we are anticipating that there will be a lot of footfall from Assam and Bangladesh. We have not lost hope and there are two vibrant days remaining of Me’gong.”

When asked why the organisers did not put dome or canopy for the main stage, he replied, “We will certainly take a review of the event based on how successful the Cherry Blossom and Me’gong festival has been for us.”

He also added, “Hopefully, according to the weather prediction, the weather should clear up by midnight and the day 2 and day 3 program should go on as scheduled.”
