Mid Day Meal workers of Meghalaya hold hunger strike demanding wages

Shillong, May 31: The Mid Day Meal workers under the PM Poshan of Meghalaya on Tuesday held a peaceful hunger strike to appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also the Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to take action on their long pending demands.

Speaking to the media persons, Khroo L. Pariat, the adviser of the All Jaintia Mid Day Meal Workers Union (CEC), said the state government has falsely reported to the Centre that it has paid wages to PM Poshan (MDM) on a monthly basis through bank account. He said the workers will launch an agitation if the government keep turning deaf ear to their demands.

Pariat said that the Mid Day Meal (MDM) workers, consisting of cook cum helpers, want to know where the money that was supposed to be given to them has gone, when they only receive wages two times a year with two-month salary pending every single year.

The hunger strike of the Mid Day Meal workers also demanded enhancement of honorarium and clearance of their long pending dues, which was attended by hundreds of Mid Day Meal Cook cum Workers from different part of the state.

Overall, the total number of the Mid Day Meal Cook cum Helpers in Meghalaya is 14,000.

It may be mentioned that the Mid Day Meal Cook cum Helpers had submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through the Governor Satya Pal Malik on April 1, 2022.
