Tura, Feb 4: In a shocking incident on Wednesday evening, a Mahindra Xylo ferrying passengers from Guwahati to Tura was allegedly attacked by miscreants near Paikan Bridge in Assam’s Goalpara district, leaving one passenger with minor injuries.
The vehicle (registration number ML-08H-5051) was targeted around 7 pm at Paikan, a crucial junction where traffic diverts from NH-217 to NH-17, approximately 100 kilometres from Tura.
According to the driver, Gopal Saha of Tura, the incident stemmed from a confrontation with occupants of a Swift Dzire while navigating a stretch of highway currently undergoing four-lane construction. Several portions of the road are reportedly narrow and uneven.
Speaking to Hub News, Saha alleged that the Swift Dzire attempted to overtake his vehicle from the wrong side while a truck was approaching from the opposite direction. Fearing a potential collision, he said he maintained his lane. The Swift driver allegedly responded by shouting and making threatening gestures.
Saha further claimed that the Swift later stopped ahead and its driver confronted him, questioning why he was not allowed to overtake. Despite explaining the danger posed by the oncoming truck, the other driver allegedly threatened to “show him” at Paikan.
When the Xylo reached Paikan Bridge, a stone was allegedly hurled at the vehicle, shattering the rear windshield and causing minor injuries to one passenger.
At the time of reporting, the damaged Xylo was still proceeding towards Tura — nearly 110 kilometres from the spot of the incident — with its rear glass shattered, leaving passengers shaken and exposed.
The driver said he recalls most of the Swift Dzire’s registration number as AS-01 F(?) 2848, though one character remains unclear. He added that he has informed the vehicle owner and is likely to file an FIR at Tura Police Station.
Passengers, traumatised by the attack, have demanded strict action against those responsible and urged authorities to strengthen safety measures along the busy highway stretch.
