Guwahati, Oct 12: Ahead of assembly polls in Mizoram, BJP has received a major boost with some of the MNF leaders set to join the saffron party.
MNF is playing the regional card to retain power for the second consecutive term.
The MNF has fielded all the incumbent legislators except Home Minister Lalchamliana, who opted not to contest and give change to youngsters this time. The party has also brought in 15 new faces.
The major political parties of Mizoram have geared up and started campaign in full force.
Speaker of Mizoram Assembly Lalrinliana Sailo has resigned from the post and is likely to join BJP. Sailo is a leader of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF). Recently former minister K Beichhua had resigned as MLA, and he joined BJP.
BJP, which has one MLA in the present assembly, is likely to contest in all the 40 seats.
The voting for Assembly elections in Mizoram will take place on November 7 and the counting of votes will take place on December 3.
Opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) has announced its candidates for all seats in the 40-member Assembly.
Christians form around 87 per cent of Mizoram’s population (according to the 2011 Census).
Meanwhile, all the political parties, including the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, BJP, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and People’s Conference (PC), have urged the poll panel to change the date of vote counting (December 3) as Sunday is a sacred day for Christians, and the entire day is devoted to church services across the state.
