Mizoram Polls 2023: Mizoram’s political parties, NGOs urge ECI to change date of counting

Aizawl, Oct 12: The political parties and NGOs in Mizoram have written to the Election Commission of India (ECI) demanding to change the date of counting for the November 7 Assembly polls.

EC has put counting of votes on December 3, a Sunday.

In the letter to Rajiv Kumar, Chief Election Commissioner, dated October 11, 2023, all the political parties and NGOs said, “As you aware, almost 90% of the state population is Christian and Sunday is a sacred day for the people of Mizoram. We the Mizos devotes solely to the worship of God on Sunday. No official programme or business are trusted on Sunday in Mizoram. In view of the above, we request you to kindly fix the date for counting of votes on another appropriate day not on Sunday and Saturday.”

The letter was signed by MNF, MPCC, ZPM, SEMC, PCP, ZNP, AAP, CYMA, MUP, MHIP, MZP, and MSU.
