Guwahati, July 9: Former Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP and ex-Congress leader from Assam, Sushmita Dev, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday, saying she saw “no future” in the Mamata Banerjee-led party.
Dev was inducted into the BJP at the party’s state headquarters in Salt Lake, Kolkata, in the presence of West Bengal BJP president Samik Bhattacharya.

Former TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray and Prakash Chik Baraik also joined the BJP.
Welcoming the new entrants, Bhattacharya handed them BJP flags in the presence of senior party leaders.
Speaking to reporters after joining the BJP, Dev cited the TMC’s electoral setbacks and corruption allegations as the reasons behind her decision.
“Since the time TMC lost power in Bengal and the facts and corruption charges that have come out subsequently, I have concluded that I don’t have any future in Trinamool, nor does the party have any future,” she said.

Dev also praised the BJP government in neighbouring Assam, saying she was impressed by the work carried out under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and looked forward to working under his guidance.
A former Lok Sabha MP from Silchar and a prominent Congress leader before joining the TMC in 2021, Dev had also served as a Rajya Sabha member from West Bengal.
Her switch to the BJP comes amid continued political churn in the TMC following its defeat in the recent West Bengal Assembly elections.
