Aizawl, Nov 7: Amid tight security voting for the 40-seat Mizoram Assembly started on Tuesday at 7 a.m.

The voters were seen waiting in long queue to cast their votes.

According to the ECI, over 8.5 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in 1,276 polling stations on Tuesday.

As many as 174 candidates from different political parties and independents are in fray in the Mizoram assembly polls.

There are a total of 4,13,064 eligible male and 4,39,028 eligible female voters in Mizoram.

Of the total 8,52,088 voters in Mizoram, 50,611 electors in the age group 18-19 who will be voting for the first time.

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), main opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Congress have fielded candidates for all the 40 seats.

The BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party have fielded 23 and four candidates, respectively, in addition to 27 independents already in the reckoning.

In the 2018 elections, the ruling MNF had bagged 26 seats with a vote share of 37.8 per cent to emerge victorious.
