Mizoram seeks Rs 10 cr from Centre to aid displaced people from Manipur

Aizawl, June 12: Mizoram government has sought Rs 10 crore from the Centre to provide relief to the 10,700 people sheltered in the state after being displaced due to the ethnic violence in Manipur since May 3.

Mizoram Home Minister Lalchamliana said the state has written to centre for assistance of Rs 10 crore to provide relief and shelter to the displaced people from Manipur.

He also mentioned that state Chief Minister Zoramthanga has written two letters to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 16 and May 23. “The Union government has not yet responded to the Chief Minister’s request,” Lalchamliana, who also holds the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation portfolio, told the media.

The Kuki-Mizo-Hmar- Zomi communities collectively known as Kukis or Zo Hnahthlak (Zo tribes) in Manipur share blood ties with the Mizos in Mizoram.

The internally displaced people are lodged at temporary relief camps in eight districts of Mizoram, while many have also been given shelter by their relatives. The maximum number of people are taking shelter in Kolasib district, bordering Assam, Aizawl and Saitual districts, while remaining are taking shelter in five other districts.
