Monsoon Fury in Meghalaya: Death toll increases to 7, over 1000 affected

Shillong, May 31: Stormy winds and extremely heavy rainfall have claimed at least 7 lives and left four injured across Meghalaya in the last three days, including Saturday. The severe weather has impacted over 1,000 people and caused significant damage to homes and infrastructure, according to a preliminary report released by the Meghalaya State Disaster Management Authority (MSDMA).

As per the MSDMA’s cumulative assessment report till 6 PM of Saturday, 1,094 people have been affected across 49 villages in 23 blocks and ten districts. In addition to the tragic loss of life, 28 houses have sustained damage, and 33 infrastructure sites have been impacted.

The extreme weather has caused extensive property damage. Incidents reported on Saturday include landslides in West Khasi Hills, Ri Bhoi (Amjok and Sumer Latara), South West Khasi Hills (Manad), and Eastern West Khasi Hills (Mawkhli).

Flooding was reported in Kalatek Shella, where two houses were washed away. Strong winds uprooted trees, damaged houses (including one in Maheshkola, Ranikor Block), and disrupted power supply across multiple blocks.

Relief operations are underway, with aid being distributed to affected families, including 10 families impacted by flood and landslide in Sumer Latara, Ri Bhoi district. Authorities continue to assess the full extent of the damages and are working to restore essential services.

2 deaths had occurred on Friday (till 6 PM) while another fives lives were lost in the last 24 hours.

Mentionably, the SDMA report details 6 deaths; another death in Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency was reported by Hub News correspondent.

Details of deceased persons:
• On Saturday, in East Khasi Hills, a 14-year-old boy, Mebanskhem Mukhim, from Kharang village, Mawkynrew Block, died after a tree was uprooted by strong winds.
• West Garo Hills reported two fatalities due to a lightning strike in Kentapara, Dadenggre Block: 7-year-old Batgrikchi A Sangma and 13-year-old Brime D Sangma.
• One Epish N. Sangma, aged age 26 years, drowned in the Gijang River (Singra River) at Maspara village in Rambrai-Jyrngam constituency, while fishing.
• On Friday, a 36-year-old male, Nikolas Kharpran, from Kyrdeng village, Bhoirymbong Block, Ri Bhoi district, drowned in the Umlew River.
• On Friday, in East Khasi Hills district, Klosliya Kharkongor, a 45-year-old resident of Lumkyntung village under Laitkroh–Khatarshnong Block, died in a landslide.
• On Friday, in East Khasi Hills district, 35-year-old Samborlang Tariang of Mawbynna, Pomlakrai drowned amidst the downpour.
