Shillong, Feb 16: Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma has downplayed recent overtures from the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), saying his focus is on building a vibrant and liveable Meghalaya.
“Various political parties may desire to have not only me but many others… but my purpose is to do what I can do and to do what I need to do to leave behind a state that can be considered as one of the most vibrant and liveable state with name and fame,” Sangma told reporters on Monday.

When asked about plans to unseat the incumbent MDA government, Sangma was cryptic. “Only on special occasions God foretold Noah when the flood was going to come… So political strategy is also like that, not always we tell. There is no warning bell when you decide on a political move because politics is a different ball game.”
Sangma emphasized that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has been respectful of the mandate given by the people. “As TMC, after I along with distinguished colleagues and friends and supporters merged into this new political entity… we have not received the mandate to form a government.”
He added that the party’s focus is on serving the people, whether in government or opposition. “Have we not demonstrated our intention to serve the people while being in the opposition? Are we not? As far as me and my team is concerned, we do our job with utmost sincerity and intention.”
