Myanmar airstrikes create panic among Mizoram’s people living near border

Guwahati, Jan 12: Fear and panic has gripped the people of Champhai district after Myanmar military bombed a key rebel camp on its border with Mizoram on Tuesday.

Champhai district of Mizoram was very close to the camp, where Myanmar’s military bombed and killed the rebels.

According to reports, one shell fell on the Indian side but there was no casualty. A truck on the river bank close to the border was damaged.

The Air strikes were launched by the Myanmar military against rebels. Similar aerial bombardments in other parts of Myanmar have caused tension with Bangladesh and Thailand.

According to reports, five cadres of Chin Human Rights Organisation were killed in the air strikes, which was launched on Camp Victoria in Chin state late Tuesday afternoon.

Mizoram’s Farkawn village is within 2 to 5 km of Camp Victoria, where the air strikes were launched. The people of the village panicked when they heard sounds of the bombing.

Sources said people working on the Indian side of the river Tiau, which demarcates the international boundary, fled to their homes in the village.

Camp Victoria is the headquarters of the Chin National Army (CNA), an ethnic armed organisation in Chin state. The militia was long dormant but since the February 1, 2021 military coup in Myanmar, it has joined hands with pro-democracy civilian militias in the fight against the junta.
