Guwahati, Aug 12: An international team of researchers led by Nagaland University has spotlighted lanthanide salts—a rare-earth compound—as a sustainable alternative to toxic corrosion inhibitors, opening new pathways for industries battling metal degradation.
Published in Coordination Chemistry Reviews (Impact Factor 23.5), one of the world’s top-ranked scientific journals, the landmark review outlines how lanthanide salts can replace hazardous inhibitors like chromates, molybdates and nitrites, which are increasingly restricted due to environmental and health concerns.
The study—led by Prof. Ambrish Singh and eight Ph.D. scholars from the university’s Corrosion and Electrochemistry Research Group (CERG)—details the chemistry, mechanisms, and industrial applications of lanthanide salts, highlighting their low toxicity, long-term stability, strong adhesion to metal surfaces, and resistance in aggressive environments.

Industries from oil and gas to marine engineering, automotive manufacturing, and renewable energy infrastructure face billions in losses each year from corrosion. With global pressure mounting to shift to eco-friendly materials, the research offers a strategic guide for adopting safer, more sustainable corrosion protection technologies.
“This discovery provides a strategic pathway for adopting safe, effective, and environmentally responsible corrosion protection methods,” said Prof. Jagadish Kumar Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University. “It not only addresses urgent industrial needs but also underscores Nagaland University’s commitment to globally relevant, impactful research.”
The review, co-authored with Dr. Chandrabhan Verma and Dr. Akram Alfantazi of Khalifa University, UAE, also examines how integrating lanthanide salts into polymers, graphene composites, sol-gels, and self-healing coatings can deliver multifunctional, long-lasting protection. The authors call for more work on formulation optimisation, scalability, and cost reduction to enable widespread industrial adoption.
The paper—Lanthanide Salts in Sustainable Corrosion Protection: Chemistry, Progress, Mechanism, Challenges and Opportunities—is being hailed as a benchmark in corrosion science, positioning Nagaland University at the forefront of sustainable materials research.
