Kohima, Jan 9: Nagaland’s adult HIV/AIDS prevalence rate among those aged 15 to 49 stands at 1.36%, far exceeding the national average of 0.2%, according to the state Economic Survey 2023-24.
Among the general population, the prevalence rate is even higher at 1.61%, the survey reported.
From 2006 to 2023, 33,396 individuals tested positive for HIV in the state after screening approximately 16 lakh blood samples. During 2023-24 alone, 1.17% of all blood samples tested were positive for HIV.
The survey also highlighted that 14.83% of those diagnosed with HIV are currently receiving MBP Nevirapine treatment.
For children under 14, 2.06% of those screened during 2023-24 tested positive for HIV, with 53.70% being male and 46.30% female. From October 2007 to November 2023, a total of 1,385 children (or 2.09% of the total tested) in this age group were confirmed HIV-positive.
As of the latest data, 26,419 HIV-positive patients were registered at Antiretroviral Therapy Centres (ARTC) in the state. Of these, 21,110 were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART), while 3,116 patients on ART had died.
The report underscores the urgent need for enhanced awareness and intervention programs to address the alarming prevalence rates in the state.
