Shillong, Nov 11: Over 200 students from various departments participated in National Education Day 2025 at the Captain Williamson Sangma State University at Balakgre in Southwest Garo Hills on Tuesday.
“AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation” is the theme of National Education Day 2025.
The day-long programme, organized by the Department of Education, CWSSU featured insightful speeches, a symposium, and literary competitions.
The inaugural session, moderated by Dr. Geetam Chetry, began with a warm welcome address by Deiborme Lyngdoh. Singje Ch. Marak, Deputy Registrar, spoke on the significance of National Education Day, commemorating the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, India’s first Education Minister.

The keynote Address was delivered by Rev. Fr. Januarius S. Sangma, Principal of Don Bosco College, Tura. In his thought-provoking speech titled “Education and Humanity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence.
Fr. Sangma emphasized the importance of holistic education—nurturing the body, mind, spirit, and heart.
He highlighted how AI is transforming education across the world, citing examples from Finland, Japan, and South Korea, where technology supports teachers rather than replacing them. “AI enriches learning when guided by human wisdom,” he said, reminding educators and students that “automation must never replace humanity”.
Fr. Sangma also encouraged the university to integrate AI-based skill and entrepreneurship programmes to empower youth. Quoting UNESCOs principles, he called for ‘ethical and responsible’ use of technology in education.

Chief Guest Tony C. Marak, (Retd.), Former Executive Chairman of MBOSE and Advisor to CWSSU Meghalaya, delivered an inspiring address urging faculty and students to strive for excellence.

He reiterated the need for teacher facilitation, not just instruction, saying, “A great teacher inspires, but a motivated teacher transforms action.”
Marak stressed the importance of holistic and skill-based learning as envisioned by the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
He encouraged students to cultivate entrepreneurship and continuous learning, reminding them, “What you do today will shape what you become tomorrow.”

He concluded with a powerful message: “Knowledge gives information, but wisdom gives direction”

The inaugural session concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Dr. Kanika Das.
The celebration continued with a Symposium on “Reimagining Education in India: Pathways for the Future”, featuring distinguished speakers — Prof. Sherwin May Sungoh, Dr. Challang R. Marak, Prof. Brinda Bazely Kharbirymbai, and Dr. Donberd Sangma. The discussions focused on educational reforms, teacher training, and integrating AI in learning.
Post-lunch, the event featured literary activities, including a debate competition and caption writing contest, where students showcased their creativity and critical thinking.
