Guwahati, March 16: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking in the Northeast, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has seized over 155 kilograms of methamphetamine in three separate operations across Manipur, Assam, and Mizoram.
The Northeast region has emerged as a critical hotspot for drug trafficking, largely due to its proximity to Myanmar, a key player in the regional drug trade. Recognizing the growing threat, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has increased its manpower and resources to intensify operations against drug syndicates. The NCB has five zonal units and a regional headquarters in the Northeast.
On March 13, acting on intelligence inputs, NCB Imphal Zone officers intercepted a truck near Lilong, Manipur. A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 102.39 kg of methamphetamine tablets concealed in the truck’s toolbox and the rear cabin. Two occupants of the truck were taken into custody, and a subsequent follow-up operation led to the arrest of the suspected recipient of the contraband from Lilong. A four-wheeler, allegedly used for drug trafficking, was also seized.
Authorities suspect that the consignment originated from Moreh, a known transit hub for illicit drugs along the India-Myanmar border. Investigations are ongoing to trace the larger network behind the operation.
In another successful operation the same day, officers from NCB Guwahati Zone intercepted an SUV near Silchar, Assam, along the Assam-Mizoram border. A meticulous search of the vehicle revealed 7.48 kg of methamphetamine tablets concealed within the spare tire. The lone occupant was arrested, and preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs were smuggled from Moreh, with Karimganj suspected as the intended destination. Further probes are underway to identify others linked to the trafficking ring.
In a parallel development, the NCB has taken over the investigation of a 46 kg crystal meth seizure made by the Mizoram State Excise Department on March 6 at Brigade Bawngkawn, Aizawl. Four individuals linked to the drug syndicate were arrested in connection with the bust. NCB officials aim to uncover international and interstate linkages associated with this drug network.
