Must read

Shillong, Dec 5: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said the government’s decision to adapt NCERT textbooks is to help students compete at the national level.

Sangma refused to comment on the recent statement by the TMC leader and former chief minister Dr. Mukul Sangma that the government should not adopt NCERT textbooks citing that it was a ridiculous decision.

“See the NCERT is being adopted in terms of the different contents that will be there in the subjects like mathematics, science and some other few subjects. I have nothing to comment on what the individual leaders are saying. The department and the government have come to a conclusion and this decision is because number one that we feel our children need to compete at the national level and hence the contents in some cases in our state where materials that were meant for class VI or VII was taught in Meghalaya in class VIII or IX whereas in NCERT were taught in class VI,” he said.

He said that the thing is that at the national level when the assessment is made, the NCERT norms are also very important factors because there are certain aspects.

“The most crucial part maybe the hon’ble member did not understood or did not understand what we are trying to do is that we are adapting the syllabus to adapt to our own requirements. Therefore, we will be able to complete at the national level and the courses will become slightly uniform in nature. We will be able to do the quality exercise in a much better manner and whenever the adaptation is necessary to take place, we will adapt based on our local culture and history and conditions out here and then only finalise the different syllabus for different subject,” he said.
