Shillong, April 28: The Vice Chancellor in-charge of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Prof. SM Sungoh, has written to Meghalaya DGP and requested withdrawal of police forces and CAPF personnel from the campus.
Over two platoons of police personnel and a section of CRPF unit (CAPF) were deployed inside the campus on Monday following the recent assault on an assistant professor in the university’s Hindi department. This has evoked strong criticism from the NEHU Students’ Union (NEHUSU), who have asked the district magistrates to direct all police personnel to leave the campus of the university and to be stationed elsewhere.

In the letter to the DGP following the police deployment, the Acting VC wrote, “It has come to the notice of the Administration through the Security Officer, NEHU, Shillong Campus that a large number of Police Personnel have entered the NEHU Campus, Shillong without my knowledge.”
As a result, she said, the students are feeling intimidated and experiencing fear psychosis within the campus. “Given the nature of our Institution and its commitment to providing a safe and non-intimidating environment for students, the presence of these personnel has caused significant Fear Psychosis within the Campus,” she said.
In light of the situation, she urged the DGP to remove the security personnel immediately from the campus. “It is therefore requested that the personnel be immediately withdrawn to ensure normalcy in the Campus,” she added.
