Shillong, Nov 9: A two-day national seminar on ‘Craft, Culture, and Commerce of Cinema in North East India’ is scheduled to be held on November 10 and 11 at the Golden Jubilee Auditorium, North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong.

The seminar aims for a critical exploration of the multifaceted role of cinema as an artistic practice, a socio-cultural force, and an economic enterprise. The primary objective of the seminar is to foster dialogue among filmmakers, academicians, cultural practitioners, policymakers and students to envision pathways for the growth and recognition of the cinema of North East India on both national and global platforms.

The seminar, organised by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC), NEHU, in association with the North Eastern Council (NEC), will feature more than three dozen of selected presentations. Prof. Manash P. Goswami, seminar convener, informed that there would be six technical sessions over two days, along with three plenary sessions and two panel discussions with a focus on the contribution of cinema to identity formation, cultural representation and the development of a sustainable regional film economy.

Mr N. Munish Singh, Zonal Director, North East Region, Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, will be the Chief Guest and Prof. Shashwati Goswami, Regional Director, Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Aizawl, Mizoram, will grace the occasion as the keynote speaker. Noted filmmaker of the region- Ms Simi Khongtiang,  Bobby Wahengbam and Mr Sanjib Parasar, from Meghalaya, Manipur and Assam, respectively, are invited for a panel discussion on Trends and techniques of storytelling in Northeast Cinema. Another panel discussion on Rethinking Film Studies in Regional Context will be held with Prof. Abhijit Bora, Prof. Ravindra Vemula and Dr Mousumi Bhattacharyya. Noted scholar Prof. Streamlet Dkhar, Dr Lapynshai Syiem and Dr Arzuman Ara will deliver their thoughts in the plenary session. The students of the department will perform a cultural show- Rhythm of the Hills, on 10^th November at 6 pm onwards to showcase the colourful culture of the region.
