Shillong, Nov 10: With the crisis in the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) spiralling out of control after the Vice Chancellor Prof PS Shukla’s bungalow was attacked in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has talked to the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on the situation unfolding in the central university.
Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the CM announced: “Briefed the Honble Minister Education @dpradhanbjp ji on the ongoing situation in NEHU and urged him to find an amicable solution to this issue.”

The university has been put under total lockdown since November 6 by the students following the ongoing indefinite hunger strike led by the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU) and backed by the Khasi Students Union (KSU – NEHU Unit) demanding the resignation of the VC and termination of services of the Registrar and Deputy Registrar.
Miscreants vandalized the official residence and vehicle of the NEHU VC Prof PS Shukla on Sunday morning after he had made an earnest appeal to the agitating students to call off their ongoing agitation and engage in open dialogue.
However, the agitating students of NEHU have outrightly rejected the invitation of the Vice Chancellor Prof PS Shukla for talks and maintained that they will be ready to come to the negotiating table only after his stepping down as the head of the institution.
A decision on the NEHU crisis is expected once the CM returns to the city on November 14. Currently the VC, the Registrar and Deputy Registrar – the three officials targeted in the protest – are not in the campus with very high likelihood that they won’t be coming to be campus till the situation calms down.
