Shillong, July 30: The National Federation for New States (NFNS), a coalition of organizations pressing for separate statehood across India, has resolved to intensify its movement by staging a dharna at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi this December during the winter session of Parliament.
The decision was taken at a meeting in Shillong, marking the first time a national NFNS convention was hosted in the Northeast.
“This is a historic meeting as it is the first time all NFNS members have convened in Shillong,” Ingti said adding that previous meetings were held in Tura, Karbi Anglong, Tripura, Delhi, and Vidarbha.
NFNS Secretary and JACAS member Stalin Ingti told reporters after the meeting, “We have resolved to move our agitation to Delhi after September 20 and stage a mass protest in December. This movement is not new — it is rooted in long-standing statehood demands from various regions, including Karbi Anglong, Garo Hills, and Tripura.”
He recalled that Karbi Anglong’s demand for statehood dates back to the days of the All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC) but remains unfulfilled, unlike that of the Khasi and Jaintia regions. Ingti added that though the central government had initiated tripartite talks following the formation of Telangana in 2013, the dialogue has since stalled.
“We demand the immediate resumption of tripartite talks between the Centre, state governments, and the concerned organizations under NFNS,” he said.
Echoing the call, NFNS Vice President and Deputy CEM of GHADC, Nikman Ch. Marak, announced that a delegation would seek an appointment with the Union Home Minister after August 23.
“Our aim is to push forward the demand for separate states for all constituent members of NFNS,” he stated.
The NFNS brings together several regional movements from the Northeast, including the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), Garo Hills State Movement Committee, HSPDP, and JACAS. It also represents organizations from other parts of India, including Gorkhaland, Vidarbha, Bundelkhand, and Ladakh.
