Must read

Guwahati, June 9: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested three insurgents involved in the deadly ambush on security forces in Manipur’s Tengnoupal district in 2024 that claimed the lives of two police commandos and left several others injured.

The arrests are in connection with the January 17, 2024 attack on an Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) post in Moreh. According to the NIA, the accused had meticulously planned and executed the assault along with other associates.

One of the key accused, Thangminlen Mate, a resident of the Tengnoupal district and member of the banned Kuki Inpi Tengnoupal (KIT) insurgent group, was apprehended in Silchar, Assam, on May 19, 2025. He was produced before the NIA Court in Guwahati, which remanded him to judicial custody at Central Jail, Guwahati.

Two more accused — Kamginthang Gangte, a cadre of the Kuki National Army (KNA), and Hentinthang Kipgen alias Thangneo Kipgen, linked to the Village Volunteers group in Churachandpur — were arrested from Imphal on June 6. They were granted transit remand until June 9 by a Duty Magistrate ahead of their transfer to the NIA Special Court in Guwahati.

The arrests mark a significant breakthrough in case RC-05/2024/NIA/IMP, as the agency continues its efforts to identify and apprehend the remaining conspirators behind the attack.
