Nine militants arrested in Manipur

Imphal, Feb 15: In a major crackdown on militant activities, security forces arrested nine active militants from different proscribed groups in Manipur’s Imphal East on Friday.

Security forces have intensified operations against militants operating in the state following the imposition of President’s Rule in Manipur.

Four members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP – PWG) were apprehended near Khabeisoi 7 MR Gate, close to the Auto-Rickshaw parking area in Imphal East district. According to police, the arrested individuals—Lanpoklakpam Sanathoi Meitei (23), Sanabam Amitkumar Singh (40), Seram Prem Singh (49), and Md. Ithem (55)—were actively involved in extortion targeting the general public, government officials, and petrol pumps. Authorities seized one two-wheeler, three mobile phones, and two wallets from their possession.

In a separate operation in Thoubal district, security personnel arrested four active cadres of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP – Noyon) linked to kidnapping and extortion activities. The arrested individuals—Laikhuram Sanatomba Singh (22), Lourembam Suraj Singh (26), Thokchom Thoithoinganba Meitei (22), and Heikhrujam Ngongo (34)—were taken into custody from the Heirok Pt-II Chingdompok area under Heirok Police Station. The police recovered seven mobile handsets with SIM cards, one sling bag, and a four-wheeler from their possession.

Additionally, Okram Aboy Meitei (37), an active member of the United National Liberation Front (Pambei) involved in extortion, was nabbed from Nungoi Awang Leikai near Tera Makhong under Lamlai Police Station in Imphal East district.
