Shillong, May 18: The National People’s Party (NPP) has dismissed recent remarks by BJP leader Bernard Rimpu N Marak on bail granted to former Phulbari legislator Esmatur Mominin in connection with the Garo Hills unrest case, underlining that the executive government has “no role” in judicial decisions.
In a statement on Monday, NPP Garo Hills spokesperson Aldo A Sangma said the party felt the need to “place certain facts in the proper perspective” after Marak’s comments.
“In a democratic system governed by the rule of law, judicial decisions are taken independently by competent courts based on legal principles and available facts,” Sangma said.
“The executive government has no role in determining judicial outcomes, including the granting of bail.”
The NPP stressed that legal proceedings were still underway. “Bail is a legal provision available under the law and does not amount to acquittal or exoneration,” the statement said.

“Investigations in the matter continue, and the due process of law will take its own course.”
Calling for restraint from public figures, the party noted, “All public representatives and political leaders should exercise restraint and responsibility while commenting on sensitive legal matters, so as to uphold public confidence in democratic institutions and avoid unnecessary misunderstanding among the people.”
The statement also pointed to Meghalaya’s development under “peace and stability.”
“The State and Central Governments, working in cooperation, have continued to focus on development, infrastructure, welfare, and economic growth for all sections of society,” Sangma said.
With the state “moving forward on multiple fronts,” the NPP urged political rivals to avoid divisive rhetoric.
“The NPP appeals to all political stakeholders to maintain healthy democratic discourse and work constructively in the larger interest of the State and its people,” it said.
It added that the party “remains committed to peace, communal harmony, constitutional values, and inclusive development for every citizen of Meghalaya.”
