Shillong, April 21: The National People’s Party (NPP) will hold its first National Executive Committee meeting in Shillong on April 24, where the party’s national president and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma will unveil the plans and actions to be taken in the next coming three-year term of this executive body.

Informing this on Monday, NPP National Secretary and Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh expressed gratitude to party leaders Conrad K Sangma and James K Sangma for appointing her as national secretary and expressed her commitment to ensuring that Meghalaya’s critical issues remain at the forefront, alongside broader regional and national concerns.

“I will ensure that while we operate in the NE and the rest of India, we must not forget about issues that are close to the people of the state of Meghalaya. We have to fight some of these battles on a united voice; the ‘one Northeast, one voice policy’ that our party has been participating in all these years. I look forward to these assignments and I look forward to being an important voice that will help government of India look and face towards the North East to achieve some of the long pending demands that we have had as a region and particularly as a state,” Lyngdoh said.

Talking about scepticism among some individuals as to why a party from a small state like Meghalaya enjoys national status, Lyngdoh clarified that the national recognition of NPP is pivotal for uniting the Northeastern states and presenting their concerns more effectively at the national level.

“This scepticism arises from a lack of awareness about our efforts to unite the Northeast. Historically, the importance of strong connections between the state and the Centre has been clear, as demonstrated during the peak years of the Indian National Congress (INC) in Meghalaya,” she remarked.

Lyngdoh emphasised the need to dispel misconceptions about NPP’s national presence, reiterating that collective regional advocacy garners greater attention from the Central Government. She stated that recent years have shown that when Northeast states unite, their voice is stronger and their opinion is heard by government of India. “That is the intention of the operation of the NPP at the national level,” she remarked.
