“Old and long story”: Mukul on speculations of him joining BJP

Must read

Shillong, Nov 29: Former Chief Minister Dr. Mukul Sangma has dismissed reports about him joining the BJP, stating that it’s an “old and long story”. He said the report has been going around since 2014, then revived again just before he joined the West Bengal based Trinamool Congress Party.

Addressing the speculation while speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Dr. Sangma clarified that media reports, often stemming from ‘sources,’ usually refer to past events or stories.

Being bold and frank, he acknowledged there were meetings held quite some time ago, particularly in 2019-2020, as the BJP sought discussions at a senior ministerial level regarding the 2023 general elections. At that time, he had already made the decision to leave the Congress party, prompting him not to decline engaging in political discussions.

“I can be bold and frank; Yes, there were meetings but that was long long time back. In 2019-2020, I had a series of meetings, because they (BJP) wanted to have meetings at some senior Ministers level in the run-up for the 2023 general election,” he said.

He revealed that as the discussions with the BJP did not lead to the desired outcome, he remained with the Congress until the emergence of the TMC factor.

He emphasized that establishing a political party is an arduous endeavour, one deeply rooted in serving the state and its people. “Building a political party is an uphill task,” he remarked.

“Party is never the target but the target is the people. Party is just the weapon. Party is the platform, collectively we utilise this strength to achieve the goal of serving the people and in building the state,” he added.
