Omicron variant has arrived in Garo Hills, all 15 samples sent for genome sequencing detected with omicron

Tura, Jan 19: In one of the first and largest number of covid cases sent for genome sequencing from West Garo Hills, including Tura, have turned out to be the latest and fast spreading Omicron variant, it has been announced by Health officials.

Following the recent celebrations of Christmas and New Year where large gatherings took place and, more importantly, the huge drop in use of face masks by people who felt the covid pandemic was over, health officials had been warning of a major health situation arising in the region.

On Tuesday, their fears turned out to be true as the entire batch of 15 samples taken from covid patients turned out to be Omicron.

The positivity rate for covid has also risen to an alarming 11.71 percent, a worrisome situation.
The number of new infections have also begun to rise and the latest tally of active cases on Tuesday were at 174.

Just in one day (Tuesday) 54 new cases were found and genome sequencing is being done in most of the cases.

The largest number of active cases (16) were detected during testing at Tura Civil Hospital flu clinic.
